Founded in 1999, Fort Greene Volunteers [FGV] is a non-for-profit organization with 501(c) 3 status that host’s a summer basketball tournament, conducts clinics, offers educational and mentoring programs.  The co-founder of Fort Greene Volunteers/Annual Round Ball Classic Ronald Washington is a former basketball player himself who is well known throughout the community.  "I wanted the youths of Walt Whitman Housing Development to have the same opportunity that other communities have, a sports program that would give them the tools to utilize in their learning how to play the game, be a better person and to take advantage of opportunity to become a leader in what they do best".  ”I can remember when some of the best ball players came from this community, went on to star at the  high school level and on the college level.  ”We are just trying to make a different and to bring some of those glory days back.

Gary Glover, also co-founder has worked together with Ronald for the past six years.  We form Fort Greene Volunteers/Annual Round Ball Classic.  Playing basketball was the only thing to do growing up in our days.  The first two years of us establishing our objective for this community, to provide a sports program that would include girls as well as boys 10-16 years of age.  Which turned out to be very competitive in the beginning.  As time went on, we realize that this would turn out to be a big task.  ”We basically paid for the tournament from our own pockets in the beginning because the resources were just not there as of yet."  Eventually, we decided we had to go outside of the community to do some networking in order to continue.  Getting people to believe in our cause.  We started with just two members, now their are five of us in the organization Ronald Washington our President, Gary Glover our Vice-President, Mark Knox our Cheif fininacal Officer, Nicole Parks our Secretary and Gene Gibson our assistant Secretary.

2.        To establish a relationship with neighboring schools and business.

3.        To provide a platform for students to acquire skills and training for higher education.

All of the said above is what motivates Fort Greene Volunteers.  We have goals and ideas that we want to implement for our youth’s and community.  We have the youth’s involved; now we have to get their parents and business owners more actively involved.  This community is striving towards better goals we are in need of support, for this community to have a brighter future.

Founded in 1999, Fort Greene Volunteers (FGV) is a non-for-profit organization with 501 (c) 3 status that hosts basketball tournaments conducts clinics, and mentoring programs.  Since it’s founding, Fort Greene Volunteers has grown steadily, launching a full slate of athletic and special events in June 2005.  Fort Greene Round Ball Classic is designed to use basketball as a “tool” to assist young people in their athletic, educational, professional and life skill development. Our organization continues to create an environment promoting educational excellence and basketball events for the purpose to educate and assist parents on the process of finding and selecting those academic, athletic, and scholarship programs best suited to the needs of their children.

We have a working relationship with our Tenant Association, Project Reach Youths, which is located in Fort Greene, our community churches, and the local High School Dr. Susan S. McKinney School of the Arts.  Our program supports the objectives to promote community sports and educational endeavors for our inner-city youths and provide leadership.  Our educational goal is to provide opportunities for students to develop socially, and develop leadership skills, which are very important skills needed in our community for youths to understand how to be life-long learners.  By providing such a grant it will enable us to continue to effectively serve our community in helping provide a positive structure for our youths.

Thank you for your interest in Fort Greene Volunteers.  We envision building upon our collaborative success by developing our youths of tomorrow.
